5 Common Types Of Magnetic Separator For Mining

Magnetic separation refers to the magnetic equipment separating magnetic materials from other materials based on their magnetic properties. The equipment used for this operation is called a magnetic separator. Magnetic separators are widely used in resource recovery, the wood industry, mining, kiln industry, chemistry industries, etc. It is suitable for processing iron ore with a particle size of less than 3mm. Magnetic separation equipment has different classifications from different perspectives. Let’s take a look at common types of magnetic separators!

5 Types Of Magnetic Separator

  1. Wet drum magnetic separator

The magnetic separator utilizes the different specific magnetic coefficients of minerals to separate the magnetic substances in a mixture. According to different work modes, there are dry magnetic separators and wet drum magnetic separators. It has the advantages of a simple structure, large processing capacity, convenient operation, and easy maintenance.

  • Applicable materials include iron ore, hematite, magnetite, copper ore, gold ore, coal, quartz, etc.
  • Application: It is widely used for wet magnetic separation of magnetite, ilmenite, pyrrhotite, roasted ore, ilmenite, and other materials with particle size below 3mm, as well as for iron removal operations of coal, non-metallic ore, building materials, and other materials.
  • The magnetic system of the magnetic separator adopts high-quality ferrite material or composite with rare earth magnetic steel, with an average magnetic induction intensity of 100-600mT on the cylinder surface. We can provide various magnetic separators to meet different user’s requirements, including forward flow, semi-reverse flow, and reverse flow.
  1. Dry-type drum magnetic separation

The dry roller-type magnetic separator consists of magnetic rollers, a feeding hopper, a frame, a reducer, and a motor. The unloading method is a belt or tail brush, and the selected materials are sorted once and multiple times through the rotation of the magnetic rollers, thereby improving the purity and grade of the materials. The product is widely used in industries like abrasive tools, refractory materials, non-metallic mineral processing, carbon black, grain, feed, chemical raw materials, etc.

  • Applicable materials: It is mainly used for magnetic separation of weak magnetic minerals such as hematite, limonite, manganese ore, and hematite. In addition, it is suitable for separating weak-magnetic minerals such as ilmenite, wolframite, siderite, and chromite, purifying fine-grained non-ferrous metals and non-metallic minerals, like cassiterite, potassium feldspar, andalusite, sillimanite, quartz sand, zircon, and other minerals.
  • There are dry drum and dry roller-type magnetic separators. The dry-type roller magnetic separator accepts custom designs with single roll, double roll, three roll, four roll combinations, etc. It uses a stepped design in the number of magnetic rollers to complete material separation and purification.
  • The magnetic field intensity of dry magnetic separators is generally between 2000 and 15000GS. The magnetic field intensity of dry roller-type magnetic separators is higher, and they require a particle size of less than 3mm for input materials. A dry magnetic separator is a magnetic separator with high magnetic force in dry magnetic separators. Its magnetic field strength is higher than that of ordinary magnetic separators, and it also has its characteristics in material separation.

  1. High gradient magnetic separator

  • The high gradient magnetic separator is a magnetic separator for weak magnetic minerals. It has the advantages of a high enrichment ratio, strong adaptability to fluctuations in feed particle size, concentration, and grade, reliable operation, and easy maintenance. This machine achieves the dual advantages of high concentrate grade and high recovery rate by separating weakly magnetic ores.
  • Laboratory high gradient magnetic separator: It has high magnetic field strength, a large magnetic field gradient, high iron removal efficiency, and a large enrichment ratio. At the same time, the equipment has strong applicability to fluctuations in material strength and concentration. During operation, it forms a strong induction magnetic field. The slurry pump equipped with a variable frequency speed motor pumps the slurry containing magnetic impurities into the bottom feeding pipe.
  • The high gradient magnetic separator is suitable for wet separation of weakly magnetic metal ores like hematite, manganese ore, siderite, ilmenite, and scheelite, and separation of black sand, white tungsten, and tungsten tin. This equipment is also suitable for iron removal and purification of non-metallic ores such as quartz, feldspar, cassiterite, kaolin, etc. Especially for fine-grained non-metallic minerals, the purification effect is significant.
  1. Three Disk Magnetic Separator

The three-disc magnetic separator is a beneficiation equipment used to select weak magnetic minerals and rare metal minerals smaller than 2 millimeters.

     Three-disk magnetic separator product introduction:
  • The three-disc electromagnetic system includes two models: CP-500 and CP-600. The three-disc magnetic separator is suitable for the selection of magnetic difference metal minerals such as titanium ore, tungsten tin ore, chromite, niobium tantalum ore, limonite, zircon, gold red, solitary, andalusite, blue crystal, feldspar, quartz, etc., or for the removal of non-metallic materials. It is also suitable for separating and purifying magnetic and non-magnetic minerals.
Three disk magnetic separator product features:
  • The three-disc magnetic separator structure is reasonable, with a small footprint and simple operation and maintenance. It is suitable for dry operation in water-deficient mining areas for separating strong-magnetic, weak-magnetic, and non-magnetic minerals and other minerals.
     Three-disk magnetic separator structure:
  • The main part of a three-disc magnetic separator consists of a rotating disc and a vibration groove (or belt) suspended above the magnetic system.
  • Laboratory magnetic separator: The magnetic separator is suitable for sorting various mixed minerals of magnetic minerals. According to the magnetic differences of minerals adjust the excitation current of each level of the disk to form a magnetic field of different intensities and separate minerals. Adjusting the induction distance between each level of the disk and the selected minerals to obtain different magnetic field induction intensities achieves primary separation of various minerals.
  1. Plate magnetic separator

Plate magnetic separator is efficient, energy-saving, and environmentally friendly. It uses magnetic force to separate substances. By using magnetic plates fixed inside the machine, the material is subjected to forced magnetic separation to achieve purposes of purification and separation. It is suitable for magnetic separation of powder, particle, and block materials.

  • In the steel industry, it is for magnetic separation in the production of steel and ferroalloys, select ores containing magnetic substances such as iron and ferrite, and separation and treatment of magnetic impurities in sewage and waste liquid.
  • Laboratory plate magnetic separator: When the material passes through the magnetic field area, the magnetic roller is in the rear section, the magnetic material is adsorbed by the magnetic field and moves along the magnetic field line to the tailings port, while the non-magnetic material is not affected by the magnetic field and continues along the original path to the purified concentrate hopper. The selection effect for strong magnetic materials is obvious.
  • Working principle: The equipment operates on the principle of magnetic force, and the specific operation process is as follows. The material enters the magnetic area of the plate magnetic separator through the feeding port. In the magnetic region, the magnetic plate exhibits a Gaussian-intensity magnetic field that adsorbs magnetic particles from the material onto the surface of the plate.
