Operation Of A Laboratory Electrostatic Separator

The experimental laboratory electrostatic separator (high-voltage electric separator) is a beneficiation equipment for electric mineral separation. Electric selection is a method of sorting minerals and materials by utilizing the differences in their electrical properties. This machine usually works with a lab crusher, lab grinding machine, gravity separation equipment, magnetic separators, etc. Electric selection is mostly used for fine mineral ore separation. It usually processes the coarse concentrate from gravity separation and other beneficiation methods. Adopt the electric separation method to improve the mineral ore grade, and produce qualified concentrates.

Working Principle

The working principle of electrical selection uses the differences in electrical properties of various minerals and materials in nature to separate them. It utilizes the difference in material conductivity to achieve material separation in a composite electric field combining a high-voltage corona and a high-voltage electrostatic electric field under electric and mechanical forces. This enhances the attraction of the electrostatic electrode to conductors and the repulsion to non-conductors. Here are some basic information on mineral electric separation.

Working Principle Of Electric Separation

  • After selection, crushing, and grinding, the mixture of metal and non-metal or other conductive and non-conductive materials falls from the feeding funnel to the top of the cylinder. The rotating material of the cylinder enters the corona electric field between the high-voltage and the grounding electrode of the cylinder. When the particles with good conductivity come into contact with the surface of the grounding electrode, they can quickly transfer the charge carried by the metal particles with good conductivity through the cylindrical electrode. Under the centrifugal force and self-gravity brought by the rotating cylinder, they leave the cylindrical electrode and fall into the receiving groove of the conductive particles.
  • The XDF laboratory electrostatic separator is suitable for separating conductive and non-conductive minerals. It can also replace screening operations for the classification of the same material, as well as for the separating work in grain processing and some seed separation work. When the material in the rotating drum enters the corona electrode the high-voltage electric field acts on the polarizer. The material is affected by various electric forces (including Coulomb force, non-electric field force, and interface suction force), centrifugal force, and gravity. Due to the different electrical properties and force states of various materials, the trajectory of the material when it falls is different, thus achieving the purpose of separating.
  • Non-metallic or non-conductive particles with weak conductivity have difficulty transferring the electric charges when in contact with a cylinder. Due to the mutual attraction of different polarity charges, they are adsorbed on the surface of the cylinder and carried to the back of the cylinder by the circular roller brush, falling into the non-conductive particle receiving groove.

Application

The main application is to select non-ferrous, black, and rare metal ores in mineral processing laboratories of higher education institutions and research institutes.

  1. Various non-metallic minerals separation experiments.
  2. Scattered metal powders, fine particles, and other insulation materials separation.
  3. Removing non-ferrous metal substances from plastics.
  4. Recycling metals such as copper and aluminum from urban solid waste.
  5. Grain and other grain selection to remove impurities.
  6. The electric field is a composite electric field that combines corona and electrostatic fields.
  7. The drum speed, pole distance, selection angle (electrode relative to the drum), voltage, feeding tank angle, and amplitude are adjustable during operation. The feeding hopper temperature and drum temperature are controllable.

Advantage of laboratory electrostatic separator

  1. Beautiful appearance. The material bin and hopper are all made of stainless steel, which does not rust or stick. It is suitable for separating various materials.
  2. Adopting a single-phase power supply reduces the requirements for the power supply, has good stability, and is easy to use.
  3. DC high voltage, strong adaptability to various mineral selection.
  4. Adopting imported programmable controllers and frequency converters to achieve excellent electrical performance of the entire machine.

Safety Issues

All types of electric selection machines must use high-voltage electricity. Therefore, the safety issues of electric selection machines are particularly prominent and should be highly valued to prevent personal and equipment accidents.

1. We must take various rigorous safety measures in the design of the equipment.

For example, the hood and other components have locking devices to prevent the electrodes from exposure. Design the overcurrent relays to avoid damage to the transformer. Both industrial production and experimental electric selection machines must have these security conditions. The electric selection machine should be equipped with a dedicated grounding wire. It can use a grid or spider mesh pattern and be buried in damp ground at a height of more than 1 meter from the ground. Each connection point must be welded and firmly and reliably connected. The resistance from the connection wire of the electric selection machine to the entire grounding wire is specified to be around 2-4 Ω.

2. Heat the filament before electric separation

Suppose it adopts a high-voltage DC generator with electronic tube rectification. When the power supply starts working, hit the filament for 10-15 minutes before sending the high-voltage electricity to the electrical selection equipment for electrical selection. Otherwise, it is easy to damage the high-voltage rectifier tube or decrease longevity. If we move the transformer’s oil tank, the machine should stand still for 2 hours before use.

3. Check the wires connect or not

When using an electric selection machine, it is necessary to check whether the equipment is well connected to the dedicated ground-wire, and never touch the high-voltage live electrode. After parking and cutting off the power supply, we need to make sure it contacts the discharge rod with the charged electrode to discharge it. Otherwise, the remaining electricity on the electrode will still pose a danger.
